I am considering doing a low mount for my turbo 331 in my 88 mustang. Looking for 1,000-1,200 crank hp with full accessories (a/c, power steering, vacuum pump in smog pump position) which limits my room for a downpipe with a fender apron positioned turbo. I have thought about just low mounting the turbo that I have and using a scavenge pump, but I have never been excited about using another component that can fail in my setup.

I saw that comp produces an oil less turbo that uses special grease instead of oil. Several people have posted pics of them running and seemed very enthusiastic about their performance. I have not been able to find any followup reports or long term reports after these have been run for a while. My car is a true street car that will actually be driven ~6,000 miles per year, so longevity and service interval are important to me. Anybody with experience running one?

So far so good. At about 500 miles and still whistling. When I talked to Comp about the service life with my use the said they would like to have a look at the bearings after two years. I put on 8,000 to 9,000 miles a summer. Seems inconvenient to send out the turbo for a car you use 12 months of the year but ok a summer only toy.
I know it's still early to make good a judgement call on which way to go but no regrets yet. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the reply. This is the kind of info I need. Would also like to see what average real world service interval is on these. Sounds like your situation is similar to mine. I would not mind having to send in once per year for service. As long as it will go more than 6,000 miles and 4-6 races per year without needing service .

Has the performance of your turbo been what you expected?

I've been using this turbo for about 3 years and it doesn't seem to be any different with the oiless cartridge. Shouldn't have a problem with it passing oil this year! :D

Ever sense I read about these turbos on your thread turbocoronet I have been thanking about one of them, running water lines instead of oil lines seemed to be a better deal but they are a new product so I will wait and see I have a ways to go yet before I will need one! :welder:

I upgraded my car 2 months ago to a pair of the Comp CT-3 6062 oil-less turbos and I am very happy with them so far. Mine is a 90% street driven car and I was tired of fighting oil problems with my Garrett BB turbos. The Ford 3v puts out very high oil pressure, about 80 at idle, it is very hard to get the oil to drain. I was running .035 restrictors and couldn't really go any lower. The oil would backup in the turbo and pass the seals into the exhaust. I run an open system with dual breathers to a catch can, no pcv setup. These spool a little quicker than my Garretts did and it's great not to see a bunch of blue smoke in the rear view mirror.

When I talked to Comp about these and explained my driving habits, they said the turbos would be good for about 30,000 miles. Then send them back and about $300 for new center lube sections. Comp was good to deal with, the only problem I had was I wanted the housings ceramic coated and I waited several weeks before they told me their coating place was backed up for 8 weeks. I got them shipped without coating and had them coated locally.

I am very skeptical but this new synthetic grease might hold up...

Keep us posted on the miles you put on these and thanks for the pics, your turbos look like they set up high and you were getting oil in the exhaust side!

Yes, as I explained the oil could not drain fast enough and would back up into the exhaust. The options were go with a scavenge pump setup or get the oil-less Comp turbos. I chose the Comp's.

Any long term report for the Comp oiless turbos from those using them for a while now?
I am considering going with a pair for my build.

    Thanks,

I only got about 4000 miles on the first oiless cartridge and then about 1200 miles on the second cartridge. This on a single t4 8079 rear mount 452 cu.in. So spinning the hell out of it the life was just not there in my application. Comp was excellent to deal with and I am now running with oil and a return pump. Hope this helps.

Check out aerocharger turbochargers they use independent oil. Basically they use sealed system and turbine oil.

Do they still make the aerocharger? They used to use them on many of the kits for snowmobiles, but have all but disappeared. They were also vgt turbos.
